There are many well recognized problems with existing health care data systems.211u001eData are fragmented and difficult to link. There are substantial gaps and 211u001einconsistencies. Data system design lags behind current policy and management 211u001eneeds. This research explores the use of a tool widely used in business 211u001eapplications, 'value chain' analysis, as a conceptual framework for considering 211u001eimprovements in health data system design. We examine general issues with 211u001eapplying value chain concepts to health care and then consider possible lessons 211u001efrom a conceptual application of a value chain approach to a specific disease 211u001econdition-prostate cancer.
