In this paper, the design and performance of a simple 1.55 um CW, FMCW CLR-system211u001ewith an output power of 1W is presented. A polarisation-independent fibre optic 211u001ecirculator is used as the transmit/receive-switch in the system, which allows for 211u001ea very simple and small system with no polarisation-maintaining components and 211u001efibres. The demonstration proved that the performance of the multifunction laser 211u001eradar system was near the theoretical upper limit. Furthermore, it also proved 211u001ethe applicability to some interesting military applications. Especially 211u001ewhispering rangefinding on diffuse targets up to 3 km was demonstrated. The 211u001esystem is capable of performing wind measurements even in very clear atmospheric 211u001econditions. The military use of coherent laser radar systems includes e.g. 211u001ewhispering ranging of targets, vibrometry for target characterization, wind 211u001emeasurement for weapon correction etc.
