摘要

National operational primary radars are an essential component of today's air traffic control system. Airport Surveillance Radars (ASR) and Air Route Surveillance Radars (ARSR) complement co-located Secondary Surveillance Radars (SSR) through their ability to detect, locate, and track aircraft that are not equipped with a transponder, or whose transponder is disabled. This provides an essential safety service in the event of a transponder failure for an aircraft in controlled airspace, and allows air traffic controllers to provide valuable advisory services such as "point outs" when visual flight rules (VFR) traffic is present in the vicinity of controlled airspace (e.g. under the instrument flight rules (IFR) approach path to an airport).
