Major Management Challenges and Program Risks: Department of Commerce.211 Performance and Accountability Series

This report addresses the major performance and management challenges confronting211u001ethe Department of Commerce. These challenges are (1) ensuring a successful 2000 211u001eDecennial Census, (2) completing the National Weather Service (NWS) technology 211u001emodernization and associated restructuring, (3) pursuing more cost-effective 211u001ealternatives to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrations in-house 211u001efleet of research and survey ships, and (4) improving financial management 211u001esystems and processes. The report summarizes GAO's and the Commerce Inspector 211u001eGeneral's findings on these challenges, the progress Commerce has made in 211u001eaddressing these issues, and what needs to be done to resolve or mitigate them. 211u001eThe Department of Commerce acknowledges these challenges, has taken steps to 211u001eaddress them, and said that it has actions under way or planned to successfully 211u001eresolve them.
