摘要

What patients as for during medical office visits - and how physicians respond -are potentially vital determinants of patient well-being and satisfaction. Considering their apparent importance, requests have been the subject of remarkably little study. The aim of this project was to develop a reliable and valid system for identifying and classifying patient requests in office practice. The project was conducted in two phases. In Study 1, the investigators tested a preliminary taxonomy of patient requests and validity in general internal medicine, but could not confirm its applicability to other clinical settings. In Study 2, a multidisciplinary team created a refined and expanded TORP and assessed its reliability, validity, and utility in both internal medicine and cardiology. Trained raters were able to reach high levels of agreement on both the presence or absence of requests (unitizing reliability) and categorization of particular requests (classification reliability).
