Amebiasis, with Especial Reference to Its Late Complications

This technical bulletin discusses the problem of amebiasis, particularly among American troops during World War II and is intended to alert Veterans Administration (VA) physicians to late complications which may be encountered in VA hospitals. Infection by Endamoeba histolytica can result in various manifestations of the disease, including amebic dysentery. Emphasis is placed on multiple laboratory tests for diagnosis. Colonic complications are described. Hepatic amebiasis is variable in severity and is best diagnosed with roentgenography to demonstrate irregularities in the contour of the liver. Pleuropulmonary amebiasis is discussed, and the types of lesions are listed. Other complications are briefly noted. Finding and treating the asymptomatic carrier is emphasized. Treatment of amebiasis requires drugs such as emetine, an arsenical carbarsone, or iodine-containing compounds, and the bulletin provides dosages and side effects. In order to identify any relapse, stool examinations are required for two years. A bibliography of 30 references is provided.
