A survey is made, more particularly from a United States viewpoint of extant knowledge on the origins and effects of long period waves in ports.nIt is shown that long period waves have character¬istics which permit almost total reflection at coastlines. Repeated reflections and trapping of energy along irregular coastlines re¬sult in standing wave systems, from which seiches are possible when resonance is achieved between the exciting frequencies and the nat¬ural oscillating properties of an embayment. Harbor basins act as 'echo-chambers' in which resonant oscillations can develop under stimulus from appropriate frequencies in the groundswell.
