Using the tight binding approximation, a representation of the valence band of BeO for certain directions in the wurtzite brillouin zone (BZ), Only the single configuration Be(1s)2 0(2p)6 is considered in the calculation, and as a result of this the ionic character of the crystal has been overemphasized.
