AERIAL DELIVERY OF AMMUNITION AND EXPLOSIVES

By a series of twenty-one missions, it was determined that, with minor exceptions, a variety of representative ammunition items can be successfully delivered by parachute without endangering friendly troops and without damaging the ammunition enough to affect its functioning. The ammunition was packed in a horizontal position and ejected from a C-119 cargo plane traveling 150 miles an hour at an altitude of 1200 - 1500 feet, so that it would land on firm ground. In most of the drops (when the parachutes functioned normally) the ammunition was unaffected and the packing suffered only negligible damage.
