摘要

The number of ribosomes in a growing bacterial cell is proportional to the rate of growth and of protein synthesis. When glucose is added to cells growing on a less rapidly metabolized carbon source they eventually achieve a higher growth rate characterized by a higher ratio of ribosomal to total protein. A technique was developed for following the synthesis of ribosomal protein during the transition from one growth condition to another. By double labeling the cells with 14C- and 3H-phenylalanine it was possible to measure both the cumulative ratio of ribosomal to total protein, and the differential rate of ribosomal protein synthesis, during the transition from the lower to the higher growth rate.
