The purpose of the study was to determine the feasibility of designing a vehicle/frame structure that would provide optimum deceleration rates for the full periphery of a vehicle under impaction with a solid object. A velocity-impact range from 10 to 60 miles per hour and an onset of acceleration rate approaching a square wave are the controlling test parameters. Results are given of a three-week research study to investigate the front seat back and restraint system performance of a 1969 Volkswagen 1500 sedan in a relatively severe deceleration environment. The purpose of this task was to provide a sound technical basis for evaluating the implication of failures reported in a 30 mph head-on crash test involving a 1957 Ford and a 1969 Volkswagen.
