The Empirical Kinetic Modeling Approach (EKMA) requires the determination of the ratio of nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHC) to oxides of nitrogen (NOx). Three geographic locations were used in analyzing the differences between NMHC/NOx ratios calculated from emission inventory data and those from ambient monitoring data. The three locations were:Los Angeles,California;San Francisco,California;and St. Louis,Missouri. The relationship between ambient monitoring NMHC/NOx ratios and emission inventory NMHC/NOx ratios was tested by applying a linear regression analysis to air quality and emission data from a number of monitoring stations in each region. The relationship was tested for each of five high-oxidant days in each of the three locations. The basic result found in all three locations was that there was little correlation between NMHC/NOx ratios calculated from ambient monitoring data and the corresponding NMHC/NOx ratios calculated from emission inventory data.
