摘要

It was the purpose of this research project to examine the chemical and biological significance of arsenical compounds in a New Jersey fresh surface water (Union Lake and the Maurice River and its tributaries) through laboratory and field investigations. These waters serve as recreational waters for the cities of Millville and Vineland, N.J. and are also a secondary source of drinking water for Millville. These waters and the bottom muds are known to contain arsenical pollutants. The specific objectives of the research were the following: Characterize and identify arsenical compounds in the water, muds, and sediments; investigate the mechanism(s) by which arsenical compounds are sorbed, released, retained, or transported by sediments.
