The mechanical stress that self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) undergoes in firefighting use is examined. Field tests were conducted to determine the vibration levels the SCBA is subject to on a moving firetruck and the force of impact received under conditions of routine use by the firefighter. Laboratory tests were conducted to determine the maximum forces that are applied to facemask straps; the minimum cutting weight for the facemask straps, facemask, breathing tube, and high pressure hose; and the force necessary to puncture the facemask, breathing tube, or high pressure hose. The authors propose realistic test methods and performance criteria for vibration and impact, and for the facemask retaining straps, the breathing tubes, high pressure hoses, and the facemasks.
