Winter 1981 Trafficability Tests of the USCGC POLAR SEA. Volume 6. Analysis of Polar Class Level Ice Resistance

Environmental and ship performance data were collected aboard the USCGC POLAR SEA in January - March 1981 as part of a multi-year program to make an operational assessment on the feasibility of a year-round transportation system serving northwestern Alaska. Level ice resistance tests were to be conducted for the purpose of developing a resistance prediction for the POLAR Class as a function of ice thickness and available thrust. No specific level ice tests were conducted, but the results of analysis of trafficability data were compared with model tests, theoretical predictions, and available full-scale data.
