Synopsis of Biological Data on Skipjack Tuna, 'Katsuwonus pelamis'

There has been a major expansion in the world's skipjack tuna, Katsuwonus pelamis, fisheries in the past decade or so with the catch increasing better than twofold, from 320,000 metric tons (t) in 1969 to 699,000 t in 1979. While catches increased in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, the most striking increase has been in the western central Pacific, which includes the Japanese southern water fishery and the fisheries of Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. In this area catches have risen over sevenfold, from 41,500 t in 1969 to 316,000 t in 1979. The catch of skipjack tuna can probably be increased over present levels.
