摘要

The panel report was prepared as part of the overall study of engineering education and practice in the United States that was conducted under the guidance of the National Research Council's Committee on the Education and Utilization of the Engineer. Many of the findings and recommendations of the report were included in the summary report of the committee (PB86-219995: Engineering Education and Practice in the United States: Foundations of Our Techno-Economic Future), but it was possible to address the various topics in more detail here. The Panel on Engineering Employment Characteristics was charged with developing an understanding of the employment patterns of engineers, technologists, and technicians-who they are, where they work, and what they do-and of how those patterns have changed or are likely to change with time. Contents: Introduction; The role of engineering; The engineering work force; Utilization of engineers; Quality of the work force; Resilience of the work force; International comparisons; Supply and demand for engineers; Supplementary data-engineering employment characteristics; Women in engineering; The social context of minorities in engineering; Informal mail survey of employers of engineers; Report on the role of the Federal Government in the education and utilization of the engineer.
