Design and Implementation Manual for a Mental Health Human Resource Data System

There is a growing interest in the collection and use of data about the mental health work force. In a collaborative project coordinated by the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE), nine States and the Indian Health Service pilot-tested the uniform human resources data sets recommended by the NIMH-sponsored Mental Health Statistics Improvement Program (MHSIP). As a result, much was learned about the design and use of human resources data. The manual presents what WICHE and the participating States learned during the pilot project. Sections of the manual move (1) from making a decision to develop a human resources data base and specifying work force problems and issues (2) through designing and implementing the survey (3) to preparing data for reports and using the data. Data collection instruments and resource needs are contained in the appendices. The manual should be useful to other States and agencies interested in developing and using mental health work force data.
