The report provides an overview of health care financing in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. It reviews present practices and proposes possible solutions to the main problems in the region. The report describes both public and private financing. It points out that social security in the region includes social insurance, public health services, and family services. Special emphasis is given to social insurance which, despite its importance in the region, has not been studied extensively. Less attention is paid to private financing because it affects only a small percentage of the population. Causes of the growing cost of health care are also analyzed. The data for the report have been standardized from a global literature search. (Copyright (c) 1989 World Bank).
