A Study of the Adequacy of the Stall-Warning Characteristics of the Snj Aircraft

The question studied in the investigation was: 'How well do Naval aviators recognize the imminence of the stall and are they then able to avoid it in the SNJ aircraft.' This question is a test of whether the stall-warning characteristics of the SNJ aircraft are adequate for operational purposes. Three principal types of Naval aviators were tested: (1) flight instructors, (2) students, and (3) other Naval aviators who fly the SNJ aircraft. A sample of each of these three groups was tested at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida, using three SNJ aircraft especially equipped for purposes of testing the aviators' recognition and avoidance of the impending stall. The study reports findings of these tests on stall recognition and avoidance for each of the three samples. (Author)
