Proposal for the Extension of Research on the Rearrangement of the Temperature Field in a Gas Flowing around a Bend.

As discussed in the original proposal, the purpose of the program is to investigate secondary flows in curved ducts. These flows can arise not only from a velocity field caused by viscous shear forces within the fluid, but also from the presence of a density (i.e., temperature) field. In actual practice such conditions are found in gas turbines, both in curved combustion chamber outlets and in turbine approach sections. A similar situation can also exist in a straight duct which is under the influence of a centrifugal force field, as found in ram-jet engines mounted at the tips of rotating helicopter blades. When the first part of the program is completed, the main investigation on non-isothermal secondary flows will be started. In the beginning this will consist of smoke studies to visually observe the changes in the secondary flows caused by the presence of temperature differences. The research under this program will be carried out by the personnel already working on the project. A cost estimate for the year is outlined. (Author)
