A model has been developed to predict the effect of gas influx from below on the coolability of a debris bed. Numerical solution of the mass, energy and momentum conservation equations show that significant reductions in the dryout heat flux only occur close to an easily calculated cut-off inlet gas velocity. This velocity is strongly dependent on the density of the incoming important factor in reducing the dryout power of the bed. Comparison of model predictions with the results of particle-bed flooding experiments show reasonable agreement. From these comparisons insight into deficiencies of the the model is gained.
