Digital data transmission tests were carried out on an argon laser beam propagating through a free atmosphere. The error frequency was determined with a PCM simulator device for several weather conditions. The transmission path was 3 km long, and led over built-up areas. The laser output was 1 W and was operated on its green line (514 nm). Apart from the results of measurements, special transmitter and receiver problems are discussed. It is shown that this form of digital data transmission is suitable only for specific applications.
