The major objectives of the study were:n(i) To gather together a comprehensive bibliography on a wide range of subjects related to the design of high reliability, fault-tolerant digital hardwaren(ii) To classify the material collected and critically assess it for its relevance to the design of fault-tolerant systems for space applicationsn(iii) To assess the applicability of specific techniques to the design of fault-tolerant satellite digital subsystemsn(iv) To report on the implications of semiconductor logic technology on fault-tolerant satellite hardwaren(v) To compare the performance of the most promising high-reliability design technique with that of TMR by way of a design exercise for a typical spacecraft digital subsystem, a microprogrammed controller serving as the hardcore of an on-board computer.
