Funding Family Violence Programs: Sources and Potential Sources for Federal Monies

This handbook lists sources of Federal funding for shelters or other support services to victims of domestic violence. Only two Federal agencies have offices dealing with domestic violence: DHEW's Office on Domestic Violence (ODV) and the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration's Family Violence Program (Department of Justice). Thirteen programs are listed under DHEW as sources for Federal monies. They include Title XX of the Social Security Act, which provides funding to the States for day care and counseling to public assistance recipients and for the prevention of child and adult abuse and neglect; Public Assistance Training Grants, which provide training in social services delivery; and the Work Incentive Program, which enables recipients of Aid to Families with Dependent Children to become economically self - sufficient. Other Federal sources of funding are listed under the Departments of Justice, Housing and Urban Development, Labor, Commerce, Treasury, Transportation, and Agriculture. In addition, programs are listed under ACTION, the Legal Services Corporation, the Appalachian Regional Commission, and the Community Services Administration.
