Microprogrammed Fast Fourier Transform for the Varian V73 and Its Application in Interactive Picture Processing

A Fast Fourier Transform machine was designed and implemented on a Varian V73 minicomputer by means of microprogramming. The machine consists of eight transform instructions and five miscellaneous ones. The implementation is discussed and a detailed description of the Fast Fourier Transform machine itself is given. Some examples of use of the machine in digital picture processing are shown. Simple digitized pictures and their corresponding power spectra are displayed. A few filtering operations on a digitized picture indicate the capability of the machine. The utilization of the machine in an interactive environment is discussed and a computer architecture for digital picture processing, is suggested.
