Emitter modules were tested in environmental conditions closely simulating a real thruster operation (minimum walls effects). The test facility used to test the emitter is described. It includes a big vacuum chamber with a hatch which reduces pumping time and some stand-by operations. The facility also includes command and control electronics with growing capability to a fully automated system allowing long duration testing. The measurement system includes wire probes and faraday cups for beam diagnostic, balance for flowrate measurements. The laboratory thruster is designed to offer a maximum flexibility and is studied as a modular device. In order to avoid frequent return to atmospheric pressure and associated cleaning, the emitter-accelerating electrode distance can be altered under vacuum. Another prominent feature of the thruster is the ability to change the positive pressure under high voltage and during thruster operation.
