The Problem of Ensuring a Specified Molecular Weight in the Process of Emulsion Polymerization

A mathematical model for assuring the quality of the copolymer derived in emulsion polymerization is presented. The process of emulsion polymerization is optimized in order to ensure that it is governed by the law that the molecular weight of the copolymer changes as a function of conversion. An algorithm permitting control of the dosage of the modifier in order to obtain a given molecular weight is derived. The solution of this problem for the case of the continuous process of emulsion copolymerization in a chain of isothermal vessels with ideal mixing is presented. the controlling variable is the concentration of the distributed make up feed, which is calculated by the analytical method.
