Storm surge forecasting models and their implementation on a CDC CYBER 205E computer are described. Model steps are: (1) process and interpolate the meteorological data, (2) compute the tide, (3) compute the tide and meteorological effects together, (4) compute the storm surge by subtracting the results of (2) from those of (3) and output the required information. The old scheme required 90 sec on an IBM 360/195. The new version which has 40% more calculation points and requires a shorter timestep and hence 25% more iterations, takes 12 sec on the CYBER. Central processing unit time is reduced by a factor of 4, compared with a standard FORTRAN version, not allowing for synchronous input/output. The programs and models may be modified in between surge seasons or within a season.
