Methods for Describing the Coexistence of Competing Degrees of Freedom in a Many Body System

Methods for obtaining a description of a systems of interacting particles in which competing degrees of freedom coexist are presented and discussed. By mapping the problem onto a parametric subspace of the full Hilbert space, tractable means of handling such problems may be formulated and approximated.
