An algorithm which reduces the maximum frontwidth and profile of the stiffness matrix associated with a grid of finite elements is described. The algorithm can produce either an efficient nodal numbering strategy or an efficient element numbering strategy. When using the frontal method for meshes comprised of a single type of high-order element, it is necessary to consider the vertex nodes only in the renumbering algorithm. The resequencing process is fully automatic, fast, and is shown to produce efficient labelings for a number of typical finite element meshes. A complete implementation of the algorithm, written in standard FORTRAN 77, is given.
