Based on FGGE data, a geographical global distribution of divergent energy fluxes and the associated heat sources and sinks was obtained. Large-scale features and seasonal march appear realistic. Studies of angular momentum budget with FGGE data show that mountain torque accounts for the fluctuations of the globally-integrated changes of angular momentum in the atmosphere. Apparently realistic estimates of the variation of the global amounts of available potential energy and kinetic energy are obtained. Large uncertainties, particularly in the tropics, in the observed values of quantities, especially those related to the moisture and divergent wind are discussed. Reproduction of the Level 3-b analyses with improved Level 2-b data and improved data assimilation systems is needed.
