摘要

The double-focussing, magnetic mass spectrometer BNMS was used during the Space Shuttle missions 7 and 41-B to investigate the gas composition in the payload inlet and the close environment of the orbiter. A continuous mass spectrum was determined in a large mass range, and trace gases in the orbiter contamination cloud were identified. The spectrometer allowed the distinction between direct particle fluxes from Orbiter surfaces and those from outside in the payload inlet. The neutral gas composition in the payload inlet under different observation conditions, the effects of ignition of the Orbiter position control drives, and the interaction of atmospheric gases with surfaces were determined.
