A low-power (micro) programmable multiprocessor for compression and decompression of image-type signals, generated by imaging sensors on board spacecraft or satellites (CADISS) is described. The CADISS enables an efficient use of the on-board mass memory and the satellite/ground downlink. It can accommodate various digital data/sensor signals: mono/multispectral (visible, infrared), multiframe (TV), and the like. The CADISS can be applied in various configurations, for instance to compress image data on-line before they are transmitted to the ground station, which enhances the downlink telemetry channel efficiency considerably; if needed, the compressed data can be stored temporarily in the satellite mass memory for postponed transmission. It can also decompress previously compressed and stored data, which allows an efficient use of the on-board mass memory, while the data structure transparency is maintained. The CADISS algorithms, technology, and testing are outlined.
