Measurement of Residual Stresses in Case Hardened Bearing Components by X-ray Diffraction

Measurements are made through the case of a gas turbine carburized bearing ring to a depth of 2 mm, using X-ray diffraction techniques coupled with material removal by chemical machining processes. The stress profile of two bearing samples is presented. The residual stress levels measured, associated with the carburizing process are greater than -200 MPa (compressive) to a depth of 1 mm.
