Performance of convolutional codes of rate R greater than 1/2 with respect to radio frequency interference (RFI) and thermal noise was evaluated for a data relay satellite. Improvement obtained by code concatenation with a Reed-Solomon-Code as outer code and a convolutional inner code was studied. Effectiveness of erasure strategies in an RFI environment was assessed. Interleaver performance in RFI conditions (channel interleaver and, in a concatenated scheme, character interleaving inserted between the two codecs) was investigated. The coding scheme recommended by the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems for telemetry channel coding was examined. Codec implementation aspects are discussed; it is shown that implementation of a repeated codec, e.g., 1/2 repeated, is much simpler than that for a normal rate 1/n (e.g., 1/4) code.
