A theory for the construction of open boundary conditions for incompletelyparabolic perturbations of hyperbolic systems is presented, and the use of this theory on equations for nonlinear acoustic propagation in seawater is demonstrated. Comparisons with the correction method for hyperbolic systems are discussed. The boundary conditions derived contain first derivatives in space. Implementation of the open boundary conditions are discussed in the context of the Chebyshev spectral collocation method. Numerical experiments are presented to show that the boundary conditions work well in practice.
