High altitude, small scale photgraphy may provide a tool for evalu¬ating potential water based recreation sites. Potential recreation sites adjacent to the proposed lake at the Tellico Project on the Little Tennessee River were evaluated. The University of Michigan aircraft took the photographs at approximately 1:21,300 in October 1968. The images produced were poor quality color infrared transparencies that were arranged on the roll to prevent stereoscopic interpretation.nSite location proved to be correct for eighty-five percent of the choices. The selection of appropriate outdoor recreation activities for each potential site was correct in more than eighty-three percent of the choices. A general recreation land-use classification designating areas for Intensive use recreation, scenic easement for farmland or for forest, historic value, or as urban development proved to be correct throughout the entire Study area. The investigator was unfamiliar with the study area while doing the photo interpretation stage of the project.nSuccess at this scale and flying height have indicated the merit of continuing the investigation with high elevation, small scale photogra¬phy.
