Land Use Planning and Water Resources Development in Palar River Left Bank Watershed, Kolar District, through Remote Sensing Techniques

Remote sensing techniques are being effectively used in recent times for resources inventory of watersheds in land use planing and water resource development. In the present study conducted during 2002, various thematic layers of land use / cover, slopes, hydro-geomorphology, and soils of the Palar River left bank watershed, Kolar taluk, Kolar district Karnataka, were prepared by interpretation of satellite data (IRS-IC PAN + LISS III merged data) and used to generate action plans. The thematic layers were merged to generate action plans. The thematic layers were merged to generate action plan for every parcel of land. The study revealed that intensive cropping should be taken in 10.28 per cent of area, beside agri-horticulture (10.03%) and agro forestry (6.75). It is also suggested that existing plantations (11.17%) and reserve forest (5.72%) should be maintained as status quo with a precaution not to disturb the ecology of the area. The water harvesting structures like check dam, nalabund, subsurface dykes, etc. should be used to recharge ground water. Therefore, integrated approach, based on action plan generated, using remote sensing techniques should be utilized for systematic and sustainable development of the watershed.
