Construction of periodic material balances is fundamental to chemical processing. In the light of such balances the processor must decide whether to continue processing or sweep down the plant. Certain economic risks are associated with either course of action. Economically optimum sweep down criterion are derived which a. minimize the maximum risk, maximized with respect to the unknown true imbalance, b. minimize the expected maximum risk utilizing a' priori information as to the likelihood of a real imbalance.
