ABSORPTION SPECTRUM AND ZEEMAN EFFECT OF DYSPROSIUM ETHYL-SULFATE

The energies and/or intensities of many absorption lines in the HsC Zeeman patterns of single crystals of dysprosium ethylsulfate (DyES) have been found to have 60° periodic anisotropy with respect to the angle 0m between the x axis of the crystal and the direction of the external magnetic field. The magnetic field was applied in the basal plane and the light was shone in perpendicular to both the c axis and the magnetic field. The spectra were observed as a function of orientation of the crystal about the c axis. The energy of every line, if it had a measurable variation, reached its maximum or minimum at a common angle, but the intensities of the lines attained their maximum or minimum values at various angles. The observations were in agree¬ment with recent works on the theory of the Zeeman effect for rare earth ions in crystal fields with C3h symmetry.
