Conceptual Design of a Dual-Use Utility Tunnel Blast Shelter for White Plains, New York

摘要

Use of underground utility tunnels (utilidors) in urban areas offers a unique solution to the problem of utility maintenance and presents a potential facility for dual-use as an interconnected blast shelter. Even without the special features required for blast protection, utility tunnels connecting the basements of large buildings could serve a very useful function by providing radiation-protected passageways between fallout shelters. This potential exists on many college campuses today.
