MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF GRANITE FROM THE TAOURIRT TAN AFELLA MASSIF, ALGERIA

The mechanical properties of a granite from the French Hoggar test site in Algeria were measured to provide input for numerical codes seeking to predict rock response to a stress wave and to assist in formulating models on which these codes are based. The measured properties include pressure-volume behavior, failure envelope as a function of mean pressure, compressional and shear velocities as a function of pressure, and three-dimensional stress-strain measurements along various loading and unloading paths. This granite responds to stress in much the same way as other granites that have been studied extensively. The failure envelope was determined to 30-kbar mean stress with no evidence of ductile behavior.
