THERMAL, STRUCTURAL AND MAGNETIC STUDIES OF METALS AND INTERMETALLIC COMPOUNDS

Nine papers, 7 published and 2 submitted, describe much of the work 6a the program for the past twelve-month period. One of the papers which has been submitted deals with the odd magnetic properties of Y6(Fe1-x, Mnx )23, ternaries. These are traced to antiferromagnetic Fe-Mn interactions. The other unpublished work is a magnetic study of Th(Co1-x, Hik)5 ternaries. The principal finding of this work in that the strong magnetic anisotropy in ThCo5 originates with the Co in the 2c sites.
