Developing Smoking Cessation Classes with Major Community Involvement.

In January 1973 various agencies involved with smoking felt there was an obligation to present a smoking cessation service, but past attempts had been spotty with a great deal of time spent on administration. Staff and energy did not warrant the results. The Bergen County Health Department and the Bergen County Unit, American Cancer Society decided to start anew. Adult evening education schools were approached. The first semester, three were chosen. To date, a total of 27 classes have been offered. Each class has a former participant, now a nonsmoker, as a moderator. Physicians volunteer their time. All registration and provision of meeting place is done by adult schools, which pay an honorarium to moderator. The courses are popular, successful, and done with minimum staff time and expense, and maximum community involvement. (APHA)
