摘要

Information about managers and management practice in social agencies was obtained in a survey to serve as a basis for the development of social welfare administration educational curriculums. The survey was one of several activities in a social welfare management curriculum development project conducted by the University of Washington. Areas emphasized in the survey were education levels and experiences of social welfare managers and tasks and activities performed by social welfare managers. An instrument was devised to obtain data from managers who worked in agencies or departments primarily staffed by social workers engaged in providing counseling services to individuals, families, and groups. The sample was drawn from agencies in public and voluntary sectors, in urban and rural areas, and from several management levels. Fourteen management activity categories were employed: planning, information processing, controlling, coordinating, supervising, evaluating, negotiating, staffing, supplying, representing, budgeting, extracurricular, direct service, and unspecified. Of 120 managers initially contacted to participate in the survey, 90 interviews were conducted. Career profile data on job entry and mobility and information on patterns of management activity and curriculum objectives suggested by the survey findings are presented. Survey forms and additional information relevant to social welfare management practices are contained in appendices.
