The feasibility of utilizing pressurized bed coal combustion for the generation of electricity is presently being considered by several industrial organizations. At present, only atmospheric units of large scale are available, and little is known with respect to the effect of pressure on the flow characteristics within the bed. It is for this reason that the research at NYU is directed to the basic understanding of the fluid mechanics within a pressurized bed specifically with regard to maximizing heat transfer. In the present paper, detailed in-bed pressure and heat transfer measurements within a one-foot diameter bed are presented in order to deduce the effects of superficial velocity, bed pressure, and bed depth on an important parameter affecting the entire flow field, the expanded height of the bed.
