Based on the following conclusions of the 1978 program, sweet sorghum does merit development as an energy crop:n• Sweet sorghum can produce high yields of fiber and sugars which can be used as feedstocks for produc­tion of fuels and other by-products.n• Sweet sorghum is drought tolerant and has a short-season determinant growth pattern. Thus, the crop is potentially adaptable to many agricultural re­gions of the U.S.nt A nutrient balance for sweet sorghum indicates that 10 kg of N was required to produce each metric ton of dry biomass. However, 75 percent of this amount was contained in leaves and possibly could be returned to the soil.n• Stalk content of potassium (K) was approximately 50 percent of the total K removed by the sweet sor­ghum plant.
