In service, many engineering structures or components subjected to cyclic loading conditions will undergo a varying state of multiaxial stress and strain. The methods of design assessment against fatigue failure in the ASME Design Codes, both in the high temperature region (1) and the sub-creep region (2) are solely based on uniaxial fatigue data and use an equivalent strain range concept to predict fatigue failure under multiaxial conditions. In view of this dependence of design code methods on uniaxial fatigue testing data, this review is concerned with the following main areas for assessment: the effectiveness of single equivalent strain range parameters in correlating multiaxial fatigue data and the implications regarding design code methods; alternative theories for predicting fatigue failure under multiaxial conditions; and high temperature multiaxial fatigue data and testing methods relevant to CDFR materials.
