Multiple Interruption of Optically Generated Acoustic Phonons in Ruby

This thesis clarifies the rate-determining processes which tend to equilibrate the bottlenecked 29 cm exp -1 phonons with the temperature bath in stationary experiments. In addition, the direct relaxation between the Zeeman components of E is measured, revealing at high pumping, both continuous and time-resolved, a strong phonon bottleneck.
